Articles: In English, we have words that work with nouns to suggest some more information about the noun.  A, an, and the are all articles.  If I tell you about the man from last night, I am talking about a definite, particular man.  The is considered a definite article.  If I tell you that I’m hungry for an apple, I’m not being picky about which apple I would like.  An and a are indefinite articles.  Not all languages feel the need to use articles.  In some languages, one might say, “I bought apple from man yesterday.”  Although it sounds awkward to English ears, speakers of these languages do not expend as much breath in their lifetimes and have more oxygen for processes like cellular respiration.
