Using Your Language Books the OCD Way – An Update

[ad name=”Adsense”]

You might remember an earlier post touting the advantages of obsessing over a language textbook as opposed to the more human activity of reading the book.  This post was written to demonstrate how to obsessively incorporate German vocabulary into everyday language even if one has only read up to page iv in the introduction of a particular German textbook.  Well, enough time has passed and the page has been turned….yes, that’s right, we are now on page iv.  Bring it!

And what a glorious moment it was, the beginning of our exploration of page iv.  Below is a recap:

Me:  Next section in this table of contents is about adverbs, you cool with this part of speech?

Language partner:  Yeah, those were introduced a while back ago.

Me:  Next section is Sprechen leicht gemacht, followed by a Wiederholung

Language Partner:  Wiederholung can help increase Wortschatz

We then preceded to fly through five more headings in the table of contents.  Why does this matter at all?

First, it demonstrates that fully absorbing nuggets of information from this text at an early stage eliminates the need to dwell on this information when it is encountered again.  The above exchange proves that not only was the information absorbed, it was absorbed well enough to instantly be recalled and put into use. A modicum of the sum knowledge of the universe is now under our control!

And why does this matter?  I don’t know… But more importantly, I now know what I know.
