So you know what separable prefix verbs are and how they function in the German language (if not, review here).  But a small warning…. One day you may see a verb that clearly looks as if it is constructed with an initial prefix, maybe a verb like verkaufen. Kaufen means “to buy” and ver- certainly looks like a prefix, so we’re all set to go! Just remember to remove that prefix and move it to the end of the sentence and……..WAIT!!! Not so fast. The purpose of this blog post is to make you aware of the existence of inseparable prefix verbs.

If you are at the point in your German studies where these might be a concern, locate them now and learn them.  In addition to some of the fundamental forces of the universe (like gravity and the electromagnetic force), there is also a hidden thread running throughout all of existence that begins to fray whenever a grammatical rule is broken. Damage to this underlying thread resonates in ways that could potentially change the course of your fate!!! What is the danger of separating inseparable prefixes? Let’s just say…….You know when you feel the urge to scratch a body part and could just swear there was something crawling there? Well, you know that man walking around Austria who just separated an inseparable prefix? That’s right you don’t…….. We can leave it at that!!! You’ve been warned.
