Ordinal Numbers…..and a tangent……

[ad name=”Adsense”]

After opening any language book, you will see a variety of linguistic jargon.  As is often the case, big words can be used to disguise seemingly simple concepts.  If you know the big words, you can pretend that you have some form of specialized knowledge that others might lack and this will give you an extra ounce of self-worth that, at its core, is probably undeserved.  🙂  If you are going to discuss language, know what ordinal numbers are.  They are the forms of numbers used to put things in a particular order.  If you can’t remember that ordinal numbers put things in order, you have deep issues.  Examples of ordinal numbers?  First, second, third….

What you might think of as regular numbers are referred to by those who want to create the illusion of having above-average intelligence as “cardinal numbers.”  This isn’t as important as the word “cardinal” would suggest.  Most Christians do their best to avoid  the “cardinal sins.”  Be careful not to refer to this as Cardinal Law…..he is actually a Bishop who recently resigned due to allegations of covering up sexual abuse.  Meditate on that irony…  You know what?  Come to think of it, there is also ambiguity in referring to the seven deadly sins as “cardinal sins” as well.  Cardinal Sin was an archbishop of Manila.  He referred to his residence as the House of Sin.  I’m going to stop typing now….  Remember what ordinal numbers are.
