Many, many books contain a preface, prologue, or introductory material of some sort. The pages associated with these sections are often numbered with Roman numerals, frequently lower case (ii, viii, etc). These lower-case numerals were never used in ancient Rome. They were developed in the Middle Ages….so follow this one….
If the term Middle Ages was coined because the years labeled thusly (this is in the dictionary) are supposedly a deviation from the path of Classical learning, it is not entirely irrational to assume that many who existed during the Middle Ages were quite deviant and decided to rebel against the Society for the Preservation of Upper-Case Roman Numerals. Once a few bad apples starting dotting those i‘s, it spread like wildfire. And this wildfire has burned full-force to the present day!
What is not widely known is that today, there exists a secret Organization for the Preservation of Those Against Anyone Still Associated with The Preservation of Upper Case Roman Numerals. Members of this organization also have a personal vendetta against having to turn too many pages of introductory material before reading what they want to read. And how do they deal with this preface-inspired petulance? With a modern day usage of their original rebellious act…..the application of lower-case Roman numerals to these pages.
Anyone who would like to join the multitudes who are members of either organization mentioned above can e-mail me and I will gladly give you a PO Box number where you can send the membership fee……….
